About Maryland_Student_Legislature	English (USA)
Maryland Student Legislature is a student organization modeled after the Maryland General Assembly. It is now in its fourteenth year and has fifteen delegations. Maryland Student Legislature acts as a forum where college students can assemble to discuss issues which are critical to not only the states youth, but also to the nations youth as a whole. Through this organization students not only address issues which are crucial to the nation, but also challenge the stereotype of college students being uninterested in current events and politics, all the while obtaining skills which cannot be gathered in a classroom. Since MSL is a model of Marylands legislative branch, the organization uses the same rules, known as parliamentary procedure (as guided by Roberts Rules of Order). Members, through training and implementation, acquire the skills of debating using this complicated procedure. Parliamentary procedure is widely used, in various forms, outside of the political world as well. Such experience in structured debate gives students, who will be entering the real world, crucial experience for anything from political debate to business meetings. Another valuable skill, especially for those interested in entering the political field is the art of bill writing. Legislation is drafted by the members to be debated at one of the two or three events held each semester. While the actual form may not be useful in other fields, the skill of expressing ones intentions clearly is something needed in every profession. Finally, Maryland Student Legislature offers multiple opportunities to listen and speak to some very influential officials of the government, both on the state and local levels. This allows students to network and make connections which could be crucial to them getting that internship over the summer or getting their first job out of college lined up before they even finish their senior thesis. While the Washington College delegation of MSL is only in its second semester, we have nearly doubled our membership. Students are becoming more interested in how our State Government works and in the issues which may effect their lives. Students have the power to express their views, as well as gather great experience and leadership skills.
