From ccoursey2 at washcoll.edu Mon Mar 3 17:56:15 2008 From: ccoursey2 at washcoll.edu (Cal Coursey) Date: Mon, 03 Mar 2008 17:56:15 -0500 Subject: Dial-up Network Service to End Message-ID: <47CC820F.306@washcoll.edu> *End of Dial-up Network Access at Washington College -- May 30, 2008* The College provided network access through the telephone dial-up service, also known as the modem pool, to the campus community during the years in which there was no high-speed Internet service in the Chestertown area. Today, high speed Internet access is readily available through the cable television and telephone providers and through wireless and satellite connections. With high speed Internet access preferred over telephone dial-up, the College's modem pool is now a very expensive service used by very few members of the College community. After evaluating the College's telephone dial-up service, it is clear that the College can no longer economically justify the continuation of this service. Therefore, Washington College is discontinuing the modem pool service at the end of the business day on Friday, May 30, 2008. Current users of the modem pool must sign-up with a new Internet provider in order to continue to have Internet access after May 30. The following lists are provided to assist the current users of the modem pool with obtaining a new Internet provider that can replace the dial-up service at Washington College. *-* *Local high-speed Internet access providers include:* - Cable TV -- Atlantic Broadband (800-559-1746) www.atlanticbb.com - DSL (Telephone) -- Verizon (410-954-6260 -- toll free) www.verizon.com - Wireless -- Bay Broadband (410-810-1050) www.baybroadband.net For locations not served by the high-speed providers, inexpensive Internet service is available through local dial-up providers such as Shorelink, DelMarVa (DMV) OnLine, and others. Shorelink's service starts at $9.95 per month. DMV Online starts at $19.95 per month. *- Dial-Up Providers include:* - Shorelink (410-604-0300) -- Kent Island Office number, but has local dial-up numbers. www.shorelink.net - DelMarVa Online -- (800-220-9262) local and national dial-up numbers. www.dmv.com - Earthlink -- (866-226-0572) National toll-free numbers. www.earthlink.net The lists provided are not intended to be all-inclusive. There may be other providers that are not listed. While this change in service is in the best interest of the College, OIT realizes this may be inconvenient for some of the current modem pool users. If there is anything OIT can do to assist you with this transition, please let us know. If you have general questions, please contact the HelpDesk at ext. 7777. If you have issues or concerns, please contact Cal Coursey, Dave de'Marsi, or Billie Dodge. -- ================================== Cal Coursey Office of Information Technologies Asst.
